In large Columbidae, the cloaca can be examined for conical papillae, to aid in the identification of males – but this requires proper training in the technique. We did not have the proper equipment, so made no effort to examine.
The fledgling shown above was caught in a mist net on 26-July-2004.
The HY was netted 17-September-2008 and had emerging pin feathers on head and body. Another HY netted on 25-September-2004 had a few pin feathers in the auriculars but sscov moult had been completed.
The AHY was netted on 1-November-2004, with ca. 10% body moult (pin feathers) noted.
