According to Knibb Sibley, Sportsmans Hall derived its name in the following manner: sportsmen on a bird hunting party found a cave large enough to be used as a house; they divided it into two parts, one for men and the other for women, then jokingly called it 'Sportsman's Hall'
Whatever the true origin of the name, Sportsmans Hall originally belonged to Hugh Barnett who also owned Biddiford and Hopewell.
