MOCHO

Mocho is the name of several places in Jamaica and traditionally signifies "the back of beyond" or, as the Dictionary of Jamaican English puts it, "A place symbolic of remoteness - a rough, uncivilised place". To describe someone as coming from Mocho is to describe that person as backward or, in Jamaican terminology, "dark".

The usage probably arose from tribal rivalry during the days of slavery. Mocho is derived from Mgboko, a place name of Calabar in Eastern Nigeria, and suggests that the Jamaican Mochos may have been settled by persons of the Ibo tribe.
