Hyde was originally owned by Edward Clarke (of the same family that owned Swanswick) and consisted of 3077 acres.The Hyde and Gibraltar properties were acquired by the government in the late 1940's under the Land Settlement Scheme. The aerial photo shows how the town has expanded southwards from the original post-emancipation settlement of Clarks Town.
