Forest in Trelawny, Jamaica appears on the 1:12,500 maps to the
north-east of Sherwood and near Duanvale and the land settlement
called New Forest. It is not shown on the newer 1:50,000 maps.
At some time, Forest belonged to a Mrs White. The rather
dilapidated old map in the Institute
of Jamaica shows a total of 931 acres, with the factory and Great
House not far from the Duanvale crossroad.
The juxtaposition of "Forest" and "Sherwood" is intriguing, though
I have never heard any local person linking the names
In 1840 the Jamaica Almanac reports that it consisted of 1288 acres
and belonged to John Atkins
New Forest is the name of a nearby, recent, housing development but the name was certainly in use as early as 1944 as witnessed by the gravestone in St Michaels Church, Clarks Town.
