Zaire ebolavirus (Family Filoviridae)

The virus causing the 2014 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in west Africa belongs to the Zaire species in the genus ebolavirus.

Sudan ebolavirus and Bundibugyo ebolavirus have been associated with previous outbreaks in Africa, but the current outbreak caused by Zaire ebolavirus is the largest and most complex Ebola outbreak since the Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976.
